Curriculum

Insights aims to provide a broad, balanced curriculum based on the National Curriculum. The curriculum promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils whilst also preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

The curriculum model has 5 key areas:
  1. Personal and Social Development
  2. Basic Skills
  3. Key Skills
  4. Cross Curricular
  5. Healthy Living

Special Educational Needs

There is a wide range of educational ability amongst the schoool's pupils. We therefore regard it as very important that pupils receive a personalised curriculum tailored to their individual needs and interests.

The Lead Teacher ensures the needs of all pupils are met through the Individual Education Plans (IEPs) to which all members of staff contribute. We also make sure that pupils with statutory Statements of Special Educational Needs receive the education, social and emotional support described in their Statements.

Back to top Individual Learning Programme (ILP)

Pupils negotiate an individual learning programme with their Key Worker. This is based on the information provided by the referral agency, an initial assessment and details of previous education and learning opportunities.

Pupils have access to mentoring, counselling, therapeutic assessment and support built into their Individual Learning Programmes. There are opportunities for one to one tuition, small group work and intensive courses or vocational training over several days.

The learning programmes include educational visits, residentials and youth exchange programmes (see below). The programme of activities will be spread over the entire week which may include evenings and weekends.

Back to top Assessment and Qualifications

All pupils are regularly assessed throughout their learning programme as teachers develop an understanding of their strengths and areas for improvement. There are also more formal assessments starting with the baseline assessment shortly after admission to the school.

All pupils have the opportunity to gain both accredited and non-accredited learning experiences, awards and qualifications. Pupils may be entered for Year 6 and Year 9 SATS if appropriate and also for GCSE examinations. Other qualifications and awards they can achieve during their time at Insights include ASDAN awards, OCN qualifications, Duke of Edinburgh, and Basic and Key Skills.

Back to top Homework

All pupils receive homework appropriate to their individual needs which includes regular reading, spelling and numeracy practice.

Back to top Technology in Learning

ICT (Information and Communications Technology) is central to all learning programmes. We use the latest technology and e-learning resources to enable pupils to direct their own learning and develop their individual interests. Each pupil has access to on-line learning aids and a range of audio-visual tools such as video, DVD, CD-ROM, i-pods, cameras and the internet.

Back to top Sports, Art and Media

Pupils are encouraged to develop their interest and skills in sports, the arts and media. This helps build confidence and provides a sense of achievement which does not focus purely on academic achievement.

Back to top Educational Visits and Extra Curricular Activities

Educational visits and extra curricular activities play and important part in the education of pupils at Insights. We are developing links with other local schools and clubs to engage in sporting tournaments, drama events and celebrations.

Back to top English as an Additional Language

Arrangements are made as and when required to cater for pupils who require additional language support in order to access the curriculum. Specialist staff are available to provide this support.
